ELSH is based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. ELSH has been going for some five years and became a registered charity in October 2019.
Our motto is “Bringing Communities together through English”. We also provide life skills teaching in Mathematics and IT. We understand the barrier to integration, work and further education that the lack of English causes. We aim to demolish that hurdle for our students.
ELSH’s students are drawn 100% from the local refugee and migrant community in Barnsley. We only teach those over 18yrs old. The community ELSH serves has a poor grasp of English and little or no access to WI-FI and given their BAME background; they are in the high-risk group for serious complications from COVID-19.
This community faces severe discrimination in social settings, and due to their lack of English, they fail to obtain opportunities to better themselves and their families through access to further education and work.
We are already transforming people’s lives, but don’t take our word for it. Here is what some our present and former students have told us as to why ELSH is important to them.
