Campaign Overview
Barnsley has become a hub for people seeking refuge, yet funding support for these vulnerable migrants remains challenging. ELSH bridges this gap by teaching English and offering much-needed integration pathways. Through work placements, training, and health and wellness activities, we empower migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees to become active members of Barnsley’s close-knit communities. Our efforts break down language barriers, nurture mental wellness, and foster connection and community cohesion. Aim
Our campaign aims to secure six months’ rent for ELSH’s central Barnsley premises, a crucial space for the communities we serve. More than a classroom, ELSH is a welcoming, safe haven where people come to learn, connect, and access vital resources. Here, individuals can reunite, share a meal, find support through our food pantry, and receive guidance through our drop-in referral center. This dedicated venue enables us to provide not only education but a supportive community network, empowering those seeking refuge, connection, and opportunity. Help us keep this essential space open to continue offering hope and support to all.
Impact
Each year, ELSH provides free English lessons to an average of 30 people for whom English is a second language. These classes are life-changing, empowering individuals to navigate essential tasks like completing immigration forms, accessing housing, healthcare, and educational support, and pursuing employment once granted leave to remain. As participants improve their English skills, they also gain confidence, foster a sense of belonging, and break the cycle of isolation. Your support enables ELSH to continue providing this vital service, helping individuals not only build skills but find a place in our community and a path toward independence.
